The course is a three year Level 7 BA in Sport & Exercise (Soccer) which is delivered by the Institute of Technology Carlow in association with the Football Association of Ireland.  The aim of the  programme is to provide an academic qualification that  combines Coaching, Fitness and Player Development, with a broad based academic business or communications curriculum relevant to the development of the sport. The course will provide competencies and skills in such diverse areas as Player Development and Coaching.  A key element of the course will be a work placement module within a football environment.  The course will give an understanding of the cross functional nature of the business/sport environment and will develop in students a multitude of transferable business and communication skills.


WHAT WILL I BE ABLE TO DO WHEN I FINISH THE COURSE?

Graduates can progress to Level 8 programmes in Business or Communications. Students can also seek relevant employment in sports related business or public relations environments. Potential Career Paths include: FAI Third Level Football Facilitator, FAI Development Officer, FAI Administration, Sports Management, Club Development, Coaching/Fitness, Business or Public Relations.


WHAT FOLLOW-ON STUDY OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE?

Graduates of this course will be eligible to progress to the Honours Bachelor Degree courses in Business or the Honours Degree in Communications and Public Relations at IT Carlow. The mandatory stream selected at year one will dictate the specific degree course option available at the end of year three.

Applicants will be assessed on the basis of a combination of portfolio score and Leaving Certificate points.  This portfolio will involve the submission of a detailed applicant profile which will provide information on the applicants playing and coaching background and standard.  Applicants may be required to attend an interview and trials as part of the assessment of their portfolio.

Minimum Leaving Certificate entry requirements:
Stream 1:
Communications & Public Relations Five subjects at Ordinary Level D3 or better.  Subjects must include English at Higher level D3 or Ordinary Level C3 or better.

Stream 2: Business  Five subjects at Ordinary Level D3 or better.  Subjects to include English or Irish & Maths at Ordinary Level D3 or better.

Students will complete one mandatory stream as  part of the course. Mandatory steams will be selected based upon aptitude & academic performance in consultation with the Course Director/ Head of Department.
